We are Texas's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Corpus Christi raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Corpus Christi pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
- If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
- Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
- When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation
Corpus Christi Raccoon Control Tip: Getting Rid Of Raccoons Under The Porch
There are many parts of the domestic home that are potentially vulnerable to being used by wild animals as a nesting spot, and in many situations the cavity beneath the porch of the property is one of those vulnerable spaces. In general, it is more common to find raccoons in higher areas of the property such as the attic, as the animals generally feel safer above ground level, but in many situations they will take advantage of the dry and dark space and build a nest in this cavity.
Identifying A Raccoon Under A Porch
For many homeowners, the first situation they will encounter is that they will start to see signs of animal activity near the property, such as garbage being cut open for food, or footsteps in the mud or soil near the porch. This isn't always a sign of raccoons present, so it is worth monitoring that space of your home around dusk, to see if you can spot the animal coming in and out. If you do find the feces, you can also use this to identify a raccoon, as raccoon feces is usually around the size of that of a dog, but with more undigested food and particularly berries visible in the feces itself.
Precautions Before Dealing With A Raccoon Problem
Whenever you are going to deal with a raccoon issue, you should always ensure you wear protective clothing against bites and scratches, so this should generally be thick long-sleeved clothing, and also thick gloves as your hands are often most vulnerable. You should also consider wearing a breathing mask and goggles, as there are several diseases carried by raccoons which can become airborne, and can pose a threat if they are inhaled or absorbed through the fluid of the eyes.Trapping A Raccoon
Once you have identified that it is indeed a raccoon that you have present in the cavity beneath the porch, the next step is to trap and remove the animal. For this, most people will want to place the trap near the entrance to the cavity beneath the porch, but without getting too close in case the raccoon becomes defensive and may then respond aggressively. In some cases, if you are dealing with a trap-shy animal, you can carefully install a funnel of chicken wire over the entrance to the cavity that will then guide the raccoon into the entrance of the trap.
Checking For And Removing A Nest Of Baby Raccoons
Once you have caught the animal itself, you should also check the cavity for any baby raccoons that may be present, and if you are dealing with the infestation between around March and September, this is actually fairly likely. In this case, you should be able to see their small bodies within the nest under the porch if you examine the area with a flashlight. You can then move these into a box to be relocated along with the female raccoon that you have caught.
Sealing The Cavity Beneath The Porch
Once the animals have been removed and relocated, the next step is to prevent future infestations by raccoons in the same cavity beneath your porch. The best material for this purpose is wire mesh, and it is worth making sure you use a sturdy mesh that will help to permanently keep pest animals out of this cavity. While most people will embed the mesh into the soil if the ground beneath the porch is soft, if you do need access to the cavity for maintenance, then there are also removable mesh panels that can be installed to keep animals out too.
